2018 Annual Subcommittee Meeting

2017 Activities

Committee meeting presided over by Rob Bostrom/CDM Smith with about 35 in attendance.

Last year’s meeting minutes were approved

2017 Paper Review summary: 8 papers received, 1 published and 1 presented. Phil Mescher coordinated.

Website/TFR: The website has been transferred from Alan Horowitz/AJH Associates to TRBstatewide.wordpress.com. Greg Macfarlane (Transport Foundry) is the custodian. Need to count visitors and assess usefulness of site. The committee will work to coordinate content with the Traffic Forecasting Resource WIKI. A group has been formed to add content to the wiki: David Kurth, Vince Bernardin, Rob Bostrom, William Allen and Rob Schiffer.

Discussed Annual Meeting session of importance to the subcommittee (specific ones noted on agenda), mostly session 708.

Reported results of research subcommittee topics, covered in New Research. Subcommittee members include Jonathan Avner, Rob Schiffer (lead), Vince Bernardin, Marin Outwater, Rob Bostrom and Thomas Hill.

Research Results

Rick Donnelly/WSP presented (see attached ppt) on the completed NCHRP Project 20-05 synthesis study which is published as NCHRP Synthesis 514.

Colin Smith/RSG presented on the ongoing National Freight Model (see attached ppt):

Greg Erhardt/University of Kentucky presented on preliminary results of NCHRP 08-36 task 137: Assessing the Utility and Costs of Statewide Travel Demand Models (see attached ppt)

Rob Bostrom requested liaisons for key committees and other TRB units that relate to statewide travel demand modeling. Our goal is to put liaison reports on the web page. Liaison volunteers include:

New Research

Research ideas being developed by committee are:

  • Big data and OD patterns – Vince Bernardin is leading
  • Visitor (especially tourist) travel – Rob Schiffer and Thomas Hill are leading.
  • Ideal Network for Travel Demand Models – Jonathan Avner is leading.

Possible new topics include:

  • National model
  • Economic analysis with statewide models
  • CAV and statewide models
  • International model (s)
  • Dynamic update of NCHRP Synthesis 514.

These topics will be developed with our research committee prioritizing at least one topic for submittal in 2018. Coordination will be made with parent committees.

Upcoming 2018 Activities

  • Work on TFR by group mentioned in 2017 activities.
  • Research subcommittee – develop consensus ideas and get submitted by August 1st with drafts by June 1st for committee review.
  • 2019 statewide modeling Peer Exchange – Greg Giaimo is coordinating this and it will likely be held at the 2019 PAC in Phoenix
  • Hold mid-year subcommittee meeting, possible at Kansas City at the August. Rob Schiffer will take the lead.
  • Paper review in August-September, led by Phil Mescher.
  • Call for papers at beginning of June, led by research subcommittee and co-chairs.
